The tissue around teeth gets infected due to bacteria that wildly grow in the mouth. This abnormal growth of bacteria sets a process into motion, which destroys tissue around teeth; this is called periodontal gum disease.
More than 75 percent of Americans above the age of 35 are affected with some degree of gum disease. At a higher degree of gum disease, tooth loss takes place. Gum disease not only affects dental health, according to the American Dental Association, “There is evidence that bacteria in the mouth, which are associated with gum disease, may be linked to heart disease, artery blockages and stroke.”
The signs and symptoms of periodontal gum disease are:
• Bleeding gums during and after brushing teeth
• Red, puffy or sore gums
• Receding gums
• Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
• Deep pockets between teeth and gums
• Shifting teeth or loose teeth
Here are tips, put together by Drs. Lesueur and Dodaro, that can help you avoid being affected by gum disease:
1. Brush your gums - Massaging teeth regularly helps circulation and eliminates bacteria. Brush both the top and bottom of gums on either side of the tooth by applying your routine fluoride toothpaste.
2. Rinse with a fluoride rinse - Fluoride kills bacteria in the mouth. After brushing, rinse your mouth with fluoride water. This keeps the mouth fresh with no bacteria.
3. Floss every day - Bacteria cannot be visible with the naked eye. This may ultimately cause gum disease if left unattended. Flossing once a day gets rid of bacteria in mouth.
4. Rinse with a quality mouthwash - Take the suggestion of your dentist in choosing a low-alcoholic and non-irritating mouthwash brand that kills bacteria.
5. Don’t smoke or drink heavily -Â Higher incidences of gum disease and oral cancer exist in smokers and drinkers. Drinking and smoking can also contribute to yellowing of teeth. Chew sugarless gum instead.
The above-mentioned care habits greatly reduce the risk of being affected by gum disease and will help you maintain a healthy set of teeth.
