A generic version of the Plan B, morning after pill, has been approved by the FDA. This generic version is available only via prescription.
The name-brand version, Plan B (levonorgestrel), was first approved in 1999, which is manufactured by Duramed Pharmaceuticals Inc. By 2006, Plan B was available over the counter for women ages 18 and over.
Levonorgestrel can prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or birth control failure. The morning-after pill does not protect a user from sexually transmitted diseases and doesn’t terminate an already existing pregnancy.
