Once upon a time, there was a corkboard in my kitchen with an index card tacked onto the left side. Its contents read: grocery shopping list. The list worked for some time, that is ‘til I traded in my trusty (read: antiquated) Sidekick II cell phone for an iPhone. Then I had to buy iPhone “apps” (applications).
One of those apps was called Grocery Gadget Shopping List where I could, well, keep my [21st century] grocery list. One of the coolest things about the app is that it can be synced with other iPhones. So if your loved ones want you hauling more than one thing from the grocery store, they can simply add their “hauls” onto the list and have it synced with yours. Some technology, huh? All you have to do is create a list name and a password. The catch? Each member of your family has to pay for the app; it’s $2.99, a small price to pay for convenience.
You can also take a photo of the product that you (or your family members/room mates) want to buy. Sometimes, it’s best if your better half can actually see the box of feminine products that you need, not necessarily the one that is on sale.
If you’re a stickler for keeping a budget, you can also add the price of each item in your list, which will keep a running tally of the total. With today’s uncertain economy, one can’t be too careful about where their money is going.
Another useful function with this iPhone app is the ability to categorize your food items. Imagine this: you’re in the pasta aisle and the kids have been bugging you about a new (sugary) cereal with plastic action figures as the prize inside. Sigh. You just left that aisle, getting a box of oatmeal, and now you have to go back. But. With this app–or application for you formal folks–there will be no need to trot back to the aisle because items are clustered together by category, thus, saving you time. You can choose from the pre-chosen categories or you can manually add your own.
The iPhone, Grocery Gadget Shopping List app refreshes all the time too. So if you’ve added something to the list at the last minute, checked off items from your list, or even deleted items that you’ve already purchased, your loved ones will get the information in no time. For instance, I’ve had ground, Starbucks coffee on the list for a week because our local grocer didn’t have it in. Then what do you know? Later that week, my husband walked in with a bag of it. Now that’s what I call distribution of responsibilities!
