Miss America pageant winner, Katie Stam, 22, is more than just a pretty face. She’s a student at the University of Indianapolis, involved with several activities and still maintains a 3.6 GPA.

Stam is a communications’ major and was the news’ director, then later operations’ manager for the campus’ cable station, UIndy TV. She dreams of becoming a journalist–getting over any possible lingering stage fright as Miss America–but the students and staff at the university never doubted her ability to garner a national presence as Miss America.

“Honestly, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if she won,” was an earlier comment from her academic adviser, communication instructor and broadcasting veteran Scott Uecker, general manager of UIndy TV and university-owned radio station WICR-FM. “Occasionally we see a student who makes us say, ‘I’m going to be working for her someday.’ She is definitely one of those students.”

Stam’s pageant platform issue was community service, with her organizing fund-raisers to help the homeless and the Ronald McDonald House at Riley Hospital for Children. “My whole theory about community service is making it easy for people,” says Stam. “A lot of people don’t get involved because they think it’s too hard.”

The University of Indianapolis has seen its second contender for Miss America. In 1973, Karen Louise Rogers competed after being named Miss Indiana.
