The FDA is urging consumers to not use a particular kind of baby teether because of bacteria.
The bacterium, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans, was found in samples that the FDA obtained. The bacterium can cause infants with weakened immune systems diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain, although this bacterium will not harm adults.
The baby teethers are sold under the brand name: Playschool, Nuby and Cottontails. No illnesses have been reported. However, the company, Luv N’ Care Ltd, has voluntarily recalled the product.
Consumers are urged to throw away the product or return it to the store where purchased. Consumers can also call 1-800-256-2399, etx. 3106 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST.
