The down economy has certainly put the summer family vacation on hold according to Careerbuilder.com. Some of the reasons are obvious, like money, and some other reasons like guilt and anxiety are putting employees on alert.
More than 35 percent of workers said they haven’t gone or aren’t going on vacation this year. Seventy-one percent of them said they can’t afford to go, but one in five workers stated that they were afraid of losing their jobs or they feel guilty about being away from the office.
“While the current economy may be causing workers anxiety about taking a vacation this year, a break from work is essential for maintaining healthy productivity levels in the office,” said Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources at CareerBuilder. “Workers should plan ahead and make it a goal to use their vacation benefits; 15 percent reported that they didn’t use all of their allotted time last year. Utilizing your time off is even more important now due to the added responsibilities and pressure that some workers may be faced with due to the current economic situation.”
Haefner gives some tips to workers to make sure they enjoy their vacation if they do go:
* Start preparing for your vacation as soon as you know you’re going. Check with your supervisor to make sure there are no conflicting dates with important projects.
* Leave a plan, if necessary. Important due dates and contact numbers might come in handy for people who will cover for you.
* If you must do work on your vacation, stick to a schedule.
* If you’re a boss or supervisor, set an example for your employees by limiting your contact with the office while on vacation.
