There’s nothing like a little golden shimmer in you hair that the sun has created. You’re wearing your sunblock lotion (of at least 15 SPF, of course), so what seems to be the problem? Well, those summer hair highlights might be damaging to your scalp.
Not many people think about scalp sunburn when they are frolicking at the beach during the dog days of summer, but according to Dr. Craig Ziering, an authority on hair restoration, scalp sunburn can cause hair not to grow temporarily on the hair site.
Dr. Ziering has put together a few tips to keep you from getting burned:
* Drink Plenty of Water - Among the many benefits of drinking water, it is also nature’s safest and best moisturizer for skin and hair.
* Curtail the Cocktails - Before soaking up the sun with a summer cocktail, remember that alcohol dries out skin and hair. It’s just one of many good reasons to avoid overindulging.
* Keep Things Loose - Pull hair back in a loose ponytail using soft hair ties. Avoid metal clips and tight rubber bands, which can put stress on hair and cause breakage, especially when hair is wet.
* Apply Protective Sunscreen to Hair - UVA and UVB rays can damage hair, leading to split ends, breakage and loss of a healthy shine. Also, sunburn to the scalp harms hair follicles and can actually result in an embarrassing summer bald spot. Dr. Ziering suggests using Phytoplage High Protection Sun Spray.
* Sea Salt and Chlorine Are the Enemy - Rinse off hair after taking a dip, as both sea water and chlorine can dry out hair, leaving it brittle and lifeless. Besides, who wants that chlorine smell?
* Use Leave-In Conditioner or Soak Hair with Tap Water - Doing this before swimming prevents chlorine and sea salt from harming the cuticle, leading to breakage and split ends.
* Use a Wide-Toothed Comb for Wet Hair - Wet hair is especially fragile and can easily break or tear. A wide-toothed comb will reduce breakage - just toss one into the beach bag and be set for the summer.
