Assuming that natural hair is something that you can “shake and go” is an attitude that will result in damaged hair. Locs, ‘fros and other styles that fall under the “chemical free” category require serious conditioning. The coarser the hair is, the more conditioning it needs. Every phase of hair care from washing, styling, to daily maintenance requires a conditioning regime.

When washing, it is very important to use a hydrating shampoo; following up with a conditioner (not a leave-in conditioner) that will set in the hydrating nutrients, which are essential to quench your hair’s thirst. After washing, a leave-in conditioner is ideal because it works as a double threat with the conditioner.

Lastly, before styling natural hair it is important to use natural oil. Avocado, almond, or which ever type you prefer will do wonders on wet hair. Indeed, some hair textures are finer than others, so a little oil may be sufficient for achieving desired results. Once your hair is dried and styled, it will look more healthy and radiant. Oil must be applied to the scalp and hair as a daily ritual. If your hair retains oil for a long period, you may have to only oil it every two to three days.

Once again, natural hair requires care and attention as well. Going natural should not be a last resort for those who wish not to take care of their hair.
