All natural. Bare. Organic. 100% pure.
That may sound like the start of an organic food commercial. Maybe even a discussion of natural fabrics or cleaners. But it can also refer to one of the latest trends in the beauty cosmetic industry: mineral make-up.
Mineral make-up is exactly what it sounds like: make-up composed of natural earth minerals, things like zinc oxide, mica, and titanium dioxide. Unlike traditional popular make-up, mineral make-up is free from many of the additives such as synthetic dyes or perfumes that can be harmful to the skin. Though women have been using the earth to enhance their beauty for centuries, this recent incarnation of mineral make-up is said to have begun in the 1970s.
However, it has not been until recent years that the appeal of mineral make-up has hit the mainstream. Women of all ages and all skin types have been attracted to its natural ingredients and for the rich look it can provide when applied. Though any make-up can be bought in the mineral variety, it is undoubtedly the powder foundations and the blush products that have been most popular.
In addition to having smooth coverage and natural-looking colors, since mineral make-ups avoid the synthetic additives, it is actually good for skin, which means it can be worn all day long without as much risk of damaging the skin. In fact, mineral make-up also has an SPF rating of 15 and is even clean enough to not clog pores, even after a full day of use.
Some women have had issues with mineral make-up, complaining that it may dry out their skin or even make them look older. So people with normally dry skin should be especially careful when trying mineral make-up and be sure to apply a good moisturizer before using the make-up.
Though mineral make-up products have carried a hefty price tag in the past, this recent explosion in the market has created a range of mineral make-up lines, from low to high end. Some of the better-known lines include Bare Essentials, Sheer Cover, or Jane Iredale.
So, for women seeking a more natural approach to life and to make-up, mineral make-up might just be the right product. Not only is it made with pure ingredients, but also it can give a look that is purely you.
